About this course

The ability to analyse and present data in a meaningful way is an essential skill for researchers and data analysts of all disciplines. Microsoft excel is one of the most popular analytical and visualization tools which is used in the day to day functioning of many organisations. Excel provides a platform to perform simple analysis by sorting, filtering, using formulas. It also has powerful tools such as pivot tables and data analysis toolpak for more complex analysis.

Many organisations and institutions are embracing the world of brilliant data visualisation to present data in a more attractive, meaningful and easy to digest manner. Because Microsoft Excel is a software many organisations already use, this course will enable participants to maximise their use of a tool they already have and improve their data analysis and visualisation.

Course Content

The course is suitable for a range of individuals, who have little functional knowledge of Excel to those who use Excel regularly but at a peripheral level, who wish to enhance their data organisation, analysis and presentation skills. The course objectives include introducing participants to Excel, its commands, functions and tools for data analysis and visualization.

This course will teach how to use the data analysis toolpak for descriptive statistics, bi-variate analysis such as t-test, ANOVA and more complex analysis such as multiple repression. It will also cover the use of pivot tables for fast and efficient organization and analysis of data. The course will take participants through data visualization, teaching how to build various charts in meaningful ways
and how to interpret them. It will also cover the procedures for building interactive dashboards in Excel. Add-ons supported by Excel (e.g. Power BI which allow for interactive data visualization) will be introduced.

Specifically, the three-day training will teach participants the following:

Day 1 - Learn to Use Excel

Data collection methods
Understanding variables to datasets
Exploring the capabilities of Excel
Learning to use Excel
Organising data

  • Variable formats: number, string, dates and others
  • Ranges and tables
  • Sorting and filtering
  • Working with functions
Day 2 – Data Analysis: Descriptive statistics and Subgroup analysis
  • Introduction to descriptive statistics
  • Making sense of data using Excel
  • Stratified analysis
Day 3 – Data visualisation
  • Review of Excel graphs
  • Pivot charts
  • Building interactive dashboards
Functional outcomes

After the training, participants will achieve the understanding of descriptive statistics, stratified analysis and hypothesis testing. As a result, they will be able to take raw data and organize and analyse them efficiently. They will also be able to critically review research reports and papers. In essence, participants will be able to use excel optimally, making meaning of raw data and presenting them in a creative and easy to digest manner.
