About This Course

SPSS is a leading statistical software used to solve a variety of research problems. It provides a range of techniques including ad-hoc analysis, hypothesis testing and reporting – making it easier to manage data, select and perform analyses, and share your results. It is a fast, powerful statistical package designed for researchers of all disciplines. SPSS makes it easy to conduct data cleaning and management, distinctly styled graphs, descriptive analysis and advanced analysis.

Many governments, non-governmental organisations and institutions use SPSS because of the powerful capacities SPSS for data management and analysis. We provide below the reasons SPSS is increasingly being used by many organisations worldwide.

  • It is a fast, powerful and predictive statistical package designed for researchers of all disciplines
  • SPSS is a comprehensive set of statistical tools, integrated to run descriptive statistics, regression, advanced statistics and more
  • It enables users to create publication-ready charts, tables and decision trees in one tool
  • SPSS makes it easy to analyse data as it uses a simple drag and drop interface to access a range of capabilities, and work across multiple data sources
  • SPSS allows for integration with open sources- Enhance SPSS Syntax with R and Python through specialized extensions
  • Many organisation such as government departments, NGOs and private companies SPSS making SPSS a universal skill
  • One of the main advantages of SPSS is its versatility in analysing different types of data across different fields from Social research, health research to business research. As a result, many universities and consultants use SPSS

Course Content

The course is suitable for individuals who are new to SPSS and for those who feel they would benefit from a refresher course. No prior knowledge of SPSS is assumed; however, some knowledge of basic statistics (e.g., p-values, significance tests) is advantageous. The course objectives include introducing participants to SPSS and SPSS files. They will learn to use SPSS for data cleaning, management and statistical analysis including importing other types of data files like Excel, into SPSS. The theory behind the statistics will be explained and participants will be able to interpret statistical outputs. They will also achieve the understanding of descriptive statistics, confidence intervals, p-values and bi-variate inferential statistics (hypothesis testing). They will also improve their skills to critically analyse research reports. The three-day training will teach participants the following:

i

Day 1

  • Research questions
  • From variables to datasets
  • Exploring the capabilities of SPSS
  • Learn to use SPSS: drop-down menus and command syntax
  • Import data from Microsoft Excel into SPSS
  • Export data in SPSS into different formats
  • Appending and merging data from different sources
i

Day 2

  • Applications of data combination
  • Data management procedures
  • Data cleaning
  • Introduction to descriptive statistics
  • Making sense of data: more descriptive statistics
i

Day 3

  • Subgroup analysis
  • Plotting and manipulating SPSS graphs
  • First project report
i

Day 4

  • Inferential statistics and meaning of differences
  • Hypothesis testing, p-values and confidence intervals
  • Chi-squared and Fisher’s exact tests for categorical data
  • Parametric tests: t-test, ANOVA, correlation
i

Day 5

  • Non-parametric tests: ranksum test, Kruskal Wallis, correlation
  • Why multiple regression?
  • Second project report

Course outcomes

The course will teach participants the following:

After the training, participants will be able to take raw data collected in their settings, clean them, summarise them, analyse them and take appropriate action. They will also achieve the understanding of descriptive statistics and bi-variate inferential statistics. They will also be able to critically review research reports and papers. In addition to this, participants will be able to use SPSS in their practical professional work to produce neat and reproducible analysis outputs.
