About this course
Due to popular demand, CESAR is organising a data analysis clinic where researchers can come in with their datasets and work along with other researchers under the guidance and support of published statisticians and experts. This data clinic is a practical data analysis workshop
Many researchers have basic and intermediate statistical skills needed to do major analysis in their work. Often, they require assurance, statistical support and guidance to confidently complete their research report or article. If you are in this position, this twice-in- a-year opportunity is for you. From 5 to 7 December, 2016, CESAR will be running a data analysis clinic for researchers who need hands-on statistical support to complete their projects. This workshop will be facilitated by three experts who have experience in health, education, economic and applied research.
Why you should attend
Every year, CESAR trains hundreds of researchers on data analysis courses. This clinic is an opportunity for many of those researchers and other researchers to hone their data analysis skills. Creating an enabling environment for statistical analysis and report writing is something every researcher would like to tap into for maximum productivity. This workshop will provide the
For efficiency and maximum outputs, the following are expected of participants who wish to attend
Structure of the Clinic
The clinic will start with a short lecture on “Strategies for data analysis”. After which, each participant will be asked to describe their overall goal for the three days, as well as specific objectives. For example, a researcher’s goal may be to complete a paper and the specific objectives may be to perform descriptive statistics, bivariate hypothesis testing and modelling of key outcome(s). The objectives will be apportioned across the three days. Each day, rigorous and focussed work will be done by each participant with an expert guiding them. Presentations of what was achieved will be done at the end of each day by each participant.
The outcomes for this workshop will vary by participant. Overall, they include:
The course objectives include introducing participants to Stata and Stata files including do-files (which allows for quality control, quick reproducibility of analysis) and log-files (which stores data management and analysis outputs). They will learn to use Stata for data cleaning, management and statistical analysis. The theory behind the statistics will be explained and participants will be able to interpret statistical outputs.
After the course, participants will be able to take raw data collected in their settings, clean them, summarise them, analyse them and take appropriate action. They will also achieve the understanding of descriptive statistics, statistics, bi-variate inferential statistics and multiple regression. They will also be able to critically analyse research reports.
